This technique is mentioned in Vigyan Bhairav Tantra text a simple, direct method for inducing the experience of internal light, serving as a powerful and highly focused tool for concentrating the mind and achieving the Highest Reality.
The Spark of Consciousness: Dot of Subtle Light
The instruction bypasses complex visualizations, using a physical action to create a sensory anchor:
Press the eyes gently. A subtle light resembling a dot will appear at the top of the head, or in the heart. Absorb oneself there. From this meditation, one is absorbed into the Highest Reality. (Verse 37)
The core action is a gentle physical stimulus:Â “Press the eyes gently.” This is known to stimulate the optic nerve, causing a spark or dot of light to appear internally. The focus is then placed entirely on this spontaneously generated light.
Practice Instructions (Absorption into Light)
This is a seated, simple practice that leverages the mind’s natural attraction to light:
-
Posture and Action: Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and gently press the eyeballs.
-
Locate the Light:Â A “subtle light like a dot” will appear in one of two main centers:Â “either at the top of the head, or in the region of the heart”. The appearance of this light is the initial object of meditation.
-
Deep Concentration: “Concentrate deeply on this light. Become one with this light.” Since the internal light is surrounded by darkness, it becomes an extremely easy and singular object to concentrate upon.
-
Thought Dissolution: By focussing the mind completely on this one point of light, the mind is silenced. The commentary notes that this method is powerful, as the mind is easily attracted to light and can concentrate on it for long periods.
The Path to Highest Reality
The technique is similar to the yogic practice of Trataka (candle-gazing), but performed internally on a self-generated light source.
-
Silence and Absorption: As the mind is focused completely on the light, “Gradually all thoughts will disappear”.
-
Ultimate Goal: Once the mind is silenced, the practitioner “will be absorbed into God”, or the Highest Reality.
This meditation’s effectiveness stems from its dual action: a simple physical stimulus to generate an internal focal point, and the use of that luminous point to easily absorb the mind’s attention, leading directly to the thought-free state.
